Indian Ocean Dipole

Sustained changes in the difference between sea surface temperatures of the tropical western and eastern Indian Ocean are known as the Indian Ocean Dipole or IOD. The IOD is one of the drivers of Indian Monsoon. The IOD has three phases: neutral, positive and negative.

Neutral IOD phase

Water from the Pacific flows towards East Indian Ocean ( between the islands of Indonesia ). Air rises above this area and falls over the western half of the Indian Ocean basin, blowing westerly winds along the equator.

Temperatures are close to normal across the tropical Indian Ocean, and hence the neutral IOD does not affect the Indian Southwest Monsoon.

Positive IOD phase

Westerly winds weaken along the equator allowing warm water to shift towards Africa. Changes in the winds also allow cool water to rise up from the deep ocean in the east. This sets up a temperature difference across the tropical Indian Ocean with cooler than normal water in the east and warmer than normal water in the west.

Generally this means there is more moisture than normal in the atmosphere over West Indian Ocean & Arabian Sea. This changes the path of weather systems coming towards India, often resulting in more rainfall during Southwest Monsoon.

Negative IOD phase

Westerly winds intensify along the equator, allowing warmer waters to concentrate near Equatorial East Indian Ocean. This sets up a temperature difference across the tropical Indian Ocean, with warmer than normal water in the east and cooler than normal water in the west.

A negative IOD typically adversely affects the Indian Southwest Monsoon rainfall resulting in below-average rainfall over India.

ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન ડાયપોલ (IOD)

પશ્ચિમ ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન અને પૂર્વ ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન ના દરિયા ની સપાટી નું તાપમાન વચ્ચે એક ધારો ફરક ને ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન ડાયપોલ (IOD) કહે છે. IOD ભારતીય ચોમાસુ ને અસર કરતુ એક પરિબળ છે. IOD ને ત્રણ સ્થિતિ હોય છે: ન્યુટ્રલ, પોઝિટિવ અને નેગેટિવ.

ન્યુટ્રલ IOD:

પૂર્વ બાજુ ના ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન (ઇન્ડોનેશિયા ના ટાપુઓ પાસે) દરિયા નું પાણી ગરમ હોવથી હવા ઉપર ચડે છે અને ત્યાં વાદળો અને વરસાદ વર્ષે તથા પશ્ચિમ ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન બાજુ તે હવા નીચે આવે. તેથી પશ્ચિમી પવનો વિષુવૃત ઉપર ફૂંકાય.
તાપમાન સમગ્ર ટ્રોપિકલ ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન માં નોર્મલ હોઈ એટલે અને ન્યુટ્રલ IOD કહે તેમજ ઇન્ડિયન ચોમાસા ને ખાસ કઈ અસર ના કરે.

પોઝિટિવ IOD:

જયારે પશ્ચિમી પવનો નબળા પડે ત્યારે પૂર્વ બાજુ ના ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન નું ગરમ પાણી આફ્રિકા તરફ ઢસડાય જેથી પૂર્વ બાજુ દરિયા સપાટી નીચે ઊંડે થી ઠંડુ પાણી ઉપર આવે. આને હિસાબે પૂર્વ બાજુ ના દરિયા ની સપાટી નું તાપમાન ટાઢું હોઈ છે અને પશ્ચિમ બાજુ ના દરિયા ની સપાટી ગરમ હોઈ છે.

એને હિસાબે પશ્ચિમ બાજુ હવામાન માં નોર્મલ થી વધુ ભેજ હોઈ છે જે ઇન્ડિયન ચોમાસા ને ફાયદારૂપ હોઈ છે.

નેગેટિવ IOD:

વિષુવૃત ઉપર પશ્ચિમી પવનો અતિ તીવ્ર હોઈ ત્યારે દરિયા નું ગરમ પાણી પૂર્વ ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન તરફ ઢસડાય. આને હિસાબે પૂર્વ અને પશ્ચિમ વિસુવૃત ઉપર ના ઇન્ડિયન ઓસન ના તાપમાન માં તફાવત થાય છે જેમાં પૂર્વ બાજુ દરિયાની સપાટી નું તાપમાન નોર્મલ થી વધુ ગરમ હોઈ છે અને પશ્ચિમ બાજુ નોર્મલ થી વધુ ઠંડુ હોઈ છે.

નેગેટિવ IOD ઇન્ડિયન ચોમાસા ને ખરાબ અસર કરે છે જેથી નોર્મલ થી ઓછો વરસાદ થાય.
